"AO: Finally, can you give us an idea about how to create a heat plan?
JN: If I'm traveling, for example, I will look at the place that I'm going and I will consider whether I am at risk of going to a place that could have a heat wave. I may change my travel plans, or if I must go there then I will consider how to manage the situation. Where I can find a cool refuge, how I can sleep well at night, and how can I ensure that I can have a fan, or enough to drink? Do I have the right clothing packed for my trip? If I'm going to be driving, am I driving in a vehicle that won't break down?
I might even look at the news and see if the heat is causing fires; is there smoke that I should be concerned about? Heat waves compound other hazards, as we see in Canada where they have over a thousand fires currently. The fires are enhanced by heat waves and the smoke across North America is incredibly bad. If I had asthma it would be sensible to ensure that I had medication, or maybe I would consider whether I needed to be more flexible in my travel.
Heat waves require planning, individually, at workplaces, and at the community level. Starting at the individual level, we must look after our families, especially the elderly. "
